On their seventh studio album, PSYCHIC JAILBREAK (out April 15 via their own label Bat Skull Records in partnership with New Damage Records), the beloved metal stalwarts found themselves once again stepping into new territory as a band, writing and recording as a three-piece following the departure of founding member and guitarist Scott Middleton, while navigating a global pandemic.\r\n“On October 26th 2021 we started making a record,” shares lead vocalist Liam Cormier. “This was the 7th studio album for Cancer Bats but it was the first time the 3 of us, Jaye Schwarzer, Mike Peters and myself Liam Cormier, were going to record an album, we had written just the three of us. Jaye covering both guitar and bass duties, all three of us learning how to use digital means to record and arrange ideas from our separate provinces.”\r\nCormier continues, “We knew this album had to be special. Our band has never been one sole member tasked with all the writing. Over the last 15 years of releasing albums, it’s been a collaboration of the 4 of us forming all musical ideas. That being said, we knew that the 3 remaining Bats, would have to prove our worth with this next album. We wanted to show Cancer Bats fans that an exciting new future was in store for us. To say the stakes were high on this album, would be an understatement. We were all feeling a mix of excitement and nerves as we began tracking the 11 songs that would form this record.” \r\nOnce again enlisting the watchful eyes and ears of producer JP Peters (Propagandhi) at his studio Private Ear in Winnipeg, MB, Cancer Bats were looking to step up their game on their latest record and were eager to push beyond what they had achieved on their last studio album, 2018’s critically-acclaimed, commercially successful and Juno nominated album The Spark That Moves.\r\n “The Spark That Moves saw the band playing bigger shows and festival slots than we had done in years,” shares Cormier. “With packed shows across Canada, The UK, Europe and Australia, the bar had been raised for Cancer Bats and we were eager to surpass that, with this new set of songs.”\r\nOver the next three weeks, Cormier, Schwarzer and Peters saw their rough ideas exchanged in emails evolve from Garage Band home demos into thundering Cancer Bats songs. They were coming off the success of their Heart of Oak debut from 2013, its ascendancy due in large part to a collective uptick in interest for involved, forward-thinking music. The public had moved beyond toe-dipping and tire-kicking, and were instead doing headfirst dives into exploring the likes of Opeth, Mastodon, Baroness, The Ocean, Intronaut and others who originally hailed from the extreme music underground, but had since grown, matured and scrubbed behind their ears to include heaping and healthy chunks from the outskirts of their record collections and influence pools.\r\nThe Band That Auto- Correct Loves to Fuck With™ shared stages with everyone from High on Fire and Goatwhore to Boris and Lamb of God, were in the midst of a European tour when they discovered they were JUNO Award (Canadian Grammy equivalent) winners in the heavy metal/hard rock category. Flocks of migrating birds used the new Electric Six record as a homing device. Small time criminals were sentenced to four to seven E6 albums with time off for wonderful behavior. In a business so fickle, so unreliable, so difficult to navigate…the only constant was Electric Six. There was always an album a year…\r\n….until there wasn’t.\r\nFive years has gone by since the last Electric Six offering and we’ve heard the chatter. “Electric Six just doesn’t have it anymore.” “Electric Six has really let me down.” “Gotye will have an album before Electric Six does.”\r\nAs we all know…talk is cheap. And bullshit walks. And now there’s a new goddamn Electric Six record ready to go and it’s good, Jack. Real good.\r\nBehold Turquoise is here, the long awaited studio album return of Electric Six!!! Perhaps the catchiest, brightest album in their catalog, Electric Six reminds you how profoundly fun they can be, hitting you over the head with fourteen pop explosions guaranteed to burrow their way into your dance hole.\r\nThe recording of Turquoise began in January of 2020, but you know, something distracted us for a couple of years shortly after starting the record. The pandemic tacked a bit of time onto the schedule of this project and Electric Six certainly felt the need to tap into the collective feelings of the time in tracks like “Panic! Panic!” and the title track “Turquoise”.\r\nThe overall vibe of Turquoise ranges from the infectious pop of “Take Me To The Sugar” and “Staten Island Ass Squad”, to the heavy rock of “Child Of Hunger” and “Skywriting”, to the Springsteeny goodness of “Units of Time”. Electric Six is a band for all tastes, all times and all sizes.\r\nThe pandemic slowed us all down and ripped time into shreds. It forced Electric Six to take a little time to look at itself in the mirror. And who did Electric Six see staring back? The answer? It saw Electric Six. It saw Turquoise.
